All through with IST and four weeks ’til the n00bs arrive

This last week was my education group’s first Inter Service Training, or IST. It took place very close to my home, which is nice - it could have been anywhere in The Gambia, and it just so happens that admin decided on this place that’s just quite literally a stone’s throw from my front door. I mean, I could really chuck a rock from my house and break one of their windows. That close. Pretty convenient.

On Language (or A Crash Course in Wolof)

I’m feeling a bit talkative, so in addition to all the emails I just got through writing, I’m going to try to give a bit of a rundown on the language dynamic here in The Gambia. Mostly because it’s a Saturday afternoon, I have nothing else to do right now, and because I think perhaps it might be interesting reading for you, my dear audience.

Cxu vi parolas esperanton?

I haven’t taken a language course since high school, when I studied Spanish for two years. It would be fair to say that learning languages isn’t something I’ve spent a lot of time on (unless you count computer software languages, of which I know quite a few) - but that’s soon to change. In an effort to prime my brain for learning a new language (something I’ll have to do when I go overseas with the Peace Corps), I’ve been spending some time learning Esperanto.
